The textile waste you see is only part of the problem.
Much of it is created long before the clothes ever reach a store.
Sandra Junele is a textile artist, designer and founder of JUNELE, based in Dundee, Scotland. With a background in interior and textile design, she combines an understanding of materials, surfaces and spaces with hands-on making. She collects natural-fibre textile waste from local manufacturers and designers and transforms it into new materials, artworks and design pieces.
Her interest in textile waste began while studying textile design. In the knitting studios, trial and error produced samples, faulty pieces and discarded yarn. What seemed insignificant from one student quickly became substantial when an entire class was doing the same thing. She began collecting the waste and, during her final year, challenged herself to turn it into something new.
That experiment became the foundation of her practice. Junele has independently developed and refined her own process for transforming discarded yarn waste into a tactile new material, used to create wall panels, sculptural forms and design pieces.
Her approach to making was shaped by childhood in Latvia, growing up in a family of makers. Her aunties sewed, her mother knitted, her father renovated, and her grandfather made decor from wood found in the forest. She grew up with a simple belief: why throw something away when you can make something beautiful and unique from what you already have?
Junele has exhibited internationally, received multiple awards and collaborated with companies including Camira and Hallmark.

I’m creating a collaborative artwork made from fashion waste, using the colours you’ve chosen. This piece will help raise funds for my exhibition in January, allowing me to save and bring over 100 kg of fashion waste from landfill to the gallery. Each square in the artwork represents a supporter’s colour 💚 Thank you so much to everyone who’s already joined. Want to be part of this piece? Leave a comment with your favourite colour, or type “support” to find out how your colour can be added — and how you could win the artwork tooButton
